This past Monday and Tuesday Stanhope Golf Club hosted the eleventh annual Maritime Senior Challenge.  The event organized by George Spare of Moncton has twelve-man teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I. competing in two golf matches.  On Monday the six two-man teams from each province competed in a best ball match with one of the other provinces.  On Tuesday there were singles matches amongst the three teams.  The provincial team that earned the most points would be presented with the trophy.

The Stanhope Golf Club was a perfect place for this competition providing an exciting and challenging layout.  On Monday there were nine points available in the doubles best ball event.  Earning points for P.E.I. were the teams of: Gary Moore (Belvedere) and Alan Montgomery (Andersons Creek), Ron Garrett (Brudenell) and Norm Platt (Avondale), and Jim MacIntyre (Mill River) and Kenny Fraser (Mill River).  With these three victories team P.E.I. was in second place half a point behind the leader New Brunswick.  Nova Scotia was in third place half a point behind P.E.I.  It looked like it would be an exciting finish on the second day.

On the second day the thirty-six golfers were provided with ideal weather conditions sunny, warm and a light breeze.  Team P.E.I. got off to a great start winning three of their first four matches.  Mel Bernard (Andersons Creek), Alan Montgomery (Andersons Creek) and Mike McCarville (Stanhope) all beat their two opponents.  The next three members of team P.E.I. lost their close matches with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.  Alan Pickard (Belvedere) earned the next point by beating New Brunswick.  The last three Islanders picked up points to close the gap with the other two provinces.  Ron Garrett (Brudenell) was able to beat New Brunswick and split with Nova Scotia for his 1.5 points.  Jim MacIntyre (Mill River) was able to come from behind and beat both his opponents.  The final match decided the final places.  Kenny Fraser (Mill River) was able to beat Nova Scotia for team P.E.I.’s final point.  Sonny Phillips of New Brunswick won his matches to guarantee team New Brunswick the championship.  The final results were: New Brunswick 16.5 points, P.E.I. 14.5 points and Nova Scotia 14 points.  There were two P.E.I. golfers who went undefeated.  They were Jim MacIntyre (Mill River) and Alan Montgomery (Andersons Creek).

It was a great experience that everyone enjoyed.  The golfers are planning for another event next year with the suggestion that they play at the Northumberland Links in Pugwash Nova Scotia.  The Island golfers are already trying to earn a place on team P.E.I. 2015 by competing in the PEIGA Amateur (July 5, 6) and the King of Clubs Senior Men’s Golf Tour.
