Atlantic Golf Championship Heads to Newfoundland & Labrador

The 2015 Atlantic Golf Championship will be held from August 13th to 16th at the Terra Nova Resort and Golf Community on the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This is the second year of the new regional championship with the inaugural tournament held at the Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck , Nova Scotia last year. At Terra Nova players from across Atlantic Canada will play the challenging par 71 Twin Rivers course .For the past three years Twin Rivers has been ranked as one of the top 30 courses in Canada and one of the top 6 in Atlantic Canada by Score magazine.

The Atlantic Golf Championship was created by the Golf Associations of the four Atlantic Provinces. The goal was to create a first class competitive experience for the regions best men, women and senior golfers. 20 players from each province will compete over 54 holes for both team and individual honors.

Leading up to the tournament each provincial association will conduct qualifying to select the 20 players to represent them at Terra Nova. In 2015, Nova Scotia won the team portion of the Championship. This year team scoring will extend to all three rounds of the tournament.

Team and individual awards will be presented at the conclusion of play on Sunday. Individuals will compete in six divisions (Amateur Men, Women, Mid Master Men and Women and Senior Men and Women). Winners of these divisions will be awarded exemptions by Golf Canada into the 2016 national championships.

P.E.I. Golf Association Plans for Busy Year

The snow is finally melting and the Prince Edward Island Golf Association is gearing up for another busy season. This past Saturday the Association held its 43rd Annual General Meeting .

” We have a really full schedule of tournaments and programs lined up and after the a long hard winter everybody is anxious to get out to play ” said the Association’s Executive Director Ron MacNeill .

The Association offers programs and competition for golfers of all ages .

” Provincial Golf Coach Dallas Desjardins has our junior development program well underway. Over the past several months he has been visiting schools across the Island and has introduced golf to over 2000 students. The P.E.I. Junior Golf Team has been training all winter and is gearing up for a busy season of tournaments and later this month the ADL Junior Order of Merit kicks off with its first stop of the year ” said MacNeill.

” The King of Clubs Senior Men’s Tour and the new Senior Women’s Tours are also ready to go. These programs are very popular and key to keeping seniors involved in the sport . Golfers tell us that they can’t wait until they are old enough to participate in these tournaments .” said MacNeill.

A highlight of the 2015 golf season is the Island Coastal Provincial Golf Championship that will be held July 9th-11th at the Glen Afton Golf Course. The Amateur Championship is also the qualifying tournament for selecting 20 players to represent P.E.I. at the Atlantic Golf Championship this August in Newfoundland .

” The opportunity to qualify for the Atlantic Championship created a lot of excitement last year so were expecting a full field for the Island Coastal . As well the Association is adding a third round for the Men’s Division this year . Our  competitive men told us that they would like to go to three rounds and we were able to schedle it with the course ” said MacNeill.

As in past years players will compete at designated tournaments throughout the year for coveted Player of the Year honours .

” The cost for golfers to join the P.E.I. Golf Association and Golf Canada is only $20. The membership offers a ton of benefits including discounts at member courses , special golf insurance rates, a new lost golf club protection program as well as a subsrciption to Golf Canada magazine to name but a few. Golfers can purchase their membership cards at any P.E.I. Golf Association course  ” Said MacNeill.

The tournament which gets underway Saturday morning includes  Men’s , Senior Men’s, Super Senior Men’s and for the first time a Women’s Division.

“ Were really happy that our competitive women golfers want to get involved this year. I think they are really going to enjoy the tournament and the format “ said MacNeill.

The Prince Edward Island Golf Association recently completed its “ Ladies First “ golf program . This new program was established to introduce women to the game of golf .

Ladies First offered free golf clinics to women interested in taking up the sport of golf . During the month of July introductory clinics for women were held at courses throughout the province . Participants were given a basic introduction to the sport by local P.G.A. of Canada Golf Professionals .

“ We had 97 women participate in the program through clinics at 9 courses . The response to our offer was very positive and the turnout exceeded our expectations , said P.E.I. Golf Association Executive Director , Ron MacNeill.

“ Many of the women were curious about golf but didn’t know how to get started in the game. Our local P.G.A. professionals were very obliging in answering their questions and in showing them how to get started .We are optimistic that in the future many of these women may be interested in joining local clubs. The program was a great partnership with our member courses and the P.G.A. of Canada “ said MacNeill.

All of the participants names were entered into a draw for a set of ladies golf clubs and the winner was Mary Hennessey who attended a Ladies First clinic at Fox Meadow with P.G.A. of Canada Professional , Trevor Giggey.

The Prince Edward Island Golf Association represents 19 Island golf courses and 3000 local golfers . Its mandate is to grow golf in the province. The Association offers programs for juniors, men , women and senior golfers both at the recreational and competitive level .
