Please watch this space for information on any change of schedule for the 2014 Island Coastal Amateur Championship due to weather!
2014 ushers in a new era in amateur golf in Prince Edward Island. Beginning this year players will attempt to qualify through the Island Coastal Amateur Championship for the Provincial team that will represent P.E.I. at the new Atlantic Golf Championship that will be held at Bell Bay in Cape Breton this August.
20 players from 6 divisions will be invited to represent the P.E.I. Golf Association to play both as a team and as individuals in the new Atlantic Championship . The first 2 rounds of the tournament will see the four Atlantic provinces compete against each other for the Atlantic Cup. Individual scores from these two rounds plus a third round will determine individual Atlantic Champions . Players who win their individual divisions will receive an invitation to play in Golf Canadaâs 2015 National Championships .
The 6 divisions that make up the P.E.I. Provincial Amateur and the new Atlantic Championship include :
Men (under 40) – 3 players
Women (under 40) – 3 players
Mid Master Men ( 40-54) – 3 players
Mid Master Women ( 40-49) – 3 players
Senior (55+) and Super Senior ( 70+) Men – 4 players
Senior ( 50+) and Super Senior ( 65+) Women – 4 players
â The new Atlantic Championship has been in development by the four provinces for nearly three years . The idea behind it is to give the regions best players a first class competitive experience . It will allow golfers to compete within their own age group against the best in the region â said P.E.I. Golf Association Executive Director Ron MacNeill .
Following Cape Breton this year the 2015 Atlantic Championship will be held in Newfoundland with New Brunswick scheduled to host in 2016 followed by P.E.I. in 2017.
The 2014 Island Coastal Amateur Championship will be held at the Summerside Golf Course July 5th and 6th .
â Given whatâs at stake were expecting a full field for this years tournament . In addition to the 20 team spots up for grabs players are also playing for the coveted Menâs , Womenâs and Senior Amateur Championship titles . The tournament also awards double points for Player of the Year honours â said MacNeill .
Registration for the 2014 Island Coastal Amateur Golf Championship close on Friday June 27th . Entry forms and other information can be found on the Associationâs website www.peiga.ca .

The Prince Edward Island Golf Association wants to encourage more women to take up the game of golf. In an effort to introduce more women to golf the Association is offering free introductory clinics this summer at its member courses across the Island. âLadies First âis targeted to women who would like to know how to get started in the game. The clinics, offered by local PGA professionals, will offer information and basic golf instruction.
âSometimes people just donât know how to get started in golf. What clubs do I need, where can I go to practice, what are the basic rules and how do I swing the club? The goal is to answer these types of questions and to help women who want to get started in the game âsaid the Associationâs Executive Director, Ron McNeill.
Between June 15th and July 15th local courses will be offering free introductory clinics for women that are currently not members of a golf club. The schedule of clinics will be advertised in local papers and on the Associationâs website www.peiga.ca .
As an added bonus all of the women who pre-register to participate in the âLadies First â clinics will have a chance to win a set of ladies clubs that will be drawn for in August.
âThe P.E.I. Golf Association and our member courses want to encourage more women to discover the great social and health benefits of golf. It truly is a game that you can play your entire life and we encourage women to attend a clinic at a course in their area to find out how to get started âsaid McNeill.
The Prince Edward Island Golf Association has appointed Mr. Bob Irwin of Charlottetown as it’s new Chief Rules Official . As Chief Rules Official, Mr. Irwin will oversee officiating at provincial tournaments and will promote the development of new rules officials in the province . He will also coordinate the Associations Course Rating program. Mr. Irwin has officiated at a number of Provincial Championships .
“We are fortunate to have Bob accept this position. He has been a competitive golfer for many years and has a keen interest in officiating. The Rules of Golf can be challenging for golfers and it is important for the sport to have someone that understands and promotes them . Golfers at all levels ,especially juniors , can benefit from a better understanding of the rules “, said the Associationâs Executive Director , Ron MacNeill.
The Prince Edward Island Golf Association is the governing body for golf in the province. In addition to overseeing the Rules of Golf the Association delivers a number of programs for competitive golfers , seniors and juniors.
